ANTILOGY: A Critical History of Contemporary Art in Nicaragua
"In a country that has been militarily hijacked by an authoritarian government that controls all the mechanisms of political participation, art continues to offer a radical methodology to think about the construction of the past, the articulation of the present, and the imaginary of the future. It is up to artists themselves to recognize the oppressive forces within dominant institutions and abandon engagement with them."
This book explores polemical events in the history of contemporary art in Nicaragua. Applying the vibrant framework of Institutional Critique to analyze how Nicaraguan cultural institutions manage contemporary art, it highlights their enterprise to depoliticize artistic practices and preserve dominant structures.
This critical art history is divided into two parts: first, a historical overview following the development of these art institutions for the last 40 years, and second, an examination of grassroots efforts in critical art management, emphasizing self-governance, feminist education, and political commitment.
Drawing on the work of critical art theorists, this book argues for recognizing art's transformative potential in creating a just and equitable society. It contextualizes Nicaragua’s art within global struggles, including the fight against neoliberalism, colonialism, and authoritarian tendencies coming from both the right and the left. This story proposes that art's value lies in its ability to promote social agency and question historical and institutional constraints.

Este libro explora eventos polémicos en la historia del arte contemporáneo en Nicaragua. Aplicando el vibrante marco de la Crítica Institucional analizamos cómo las instituciones culturales nicaragüenses gestionan el arte contemporáneo, destacando su esfuerzo por despolitizar las prácticas artísticas y preservar las estructuras dominantes.
Esta historia crítica del arte se divide en dos partes: primero, un panorama histórico que sigue el desarrollo de las instituciones de arte durante los últimos 40 años, y segundo, una celebración de los esfuerzos en la gestión crítica del arte, enfatizando el autogobierno, la educación feminista y el compromiso político.
A partir del trabajo de los teóricos del arte crítico, este libro aboga por reconocer el potencial transformador del arte en la creación de una sociedad justa y equitativa. Contextualiza el arte de Nicaragua dentro de las luchas globales, incluida la lucha contra el neoliberalismo, el colonialismo y las tendencias autoritarias provenientes tanto de la derecha como de la izquierda. All the profits we make from this book and the art that we sell directly supports the community that we belong to. We are privileged to have some income to cover our main expenses (rent, food, electricity, internet).
Just as GenderFail explains in Manifesto, Profit-For-Survival: Discourses on Anti-Capitalist Publishing Practices, we advocate for a different definition of "profit", one that is separated from capitalist accumulation.
As an anti-capitalist art collective, all the profit we create is in opposition to "profit-for-capitalism", we don’t create profit to exploit, expand, enslave or pacify.

-Distribute art-making materials, such as weaving materials
-Collect and preserve at-risk art materials, such as zines, posters, books, magazines
-Cover operational costs for conducting critical art research
